Chevening is the UK government’s flagship scholarship for international students, funding a one-year master’s degree at any UK university. It’s highly competitive—around 2% of applicants receive an award—but the application is free and the returns are transformative.

What Chevening Covers

Full tuition fees

A monthly stipend (GBP 1,200–1,400 depending on location)

Return airfare

Arrival and departure allowances

Visa application fee

Total value: approximately GBP 30,000–45,000 depending on course and university.

Eligibility

Citizen of a Chevening-eligible country

Completed an undergraduate degree (equivalent to UK 2:1 or above)

At least two years of work experience (2,800 hours)

Apply to three different UK university courses

The Four Essays

The Chevening application requires four 500-word essays:

1. Leadership and Influence

“This is where you provide examples of leadership and influence in your professional or personal life.”

Strategy: Don’t just list leadership titles. Describe a specific situation where you influenced an outcome. Use the CAR framework: Context (what was the situation?), Action (what did you do?), Result (what changed because of you?).

2. Networking

“Chevening is looking for individuals who will build a lasting positive relationship with the UK.”

Strategy: Show existing networking behaviour—professional associations, conference participation, cross-border collaboration. Demonstrate that you understand networking as relationship-building, not transactional contact collection.

3. Studying in the UK

“Why do you want to study in the UK and how will this advance your career?”

Strategy: Be specific about the UK. Name the university, the course, and—most importantly—the specific modules, research groups, or academics that your course offers that no other country’s programme provides. Generic praise of “world-class education” is wasted space.

4. Career Plan

“Outline your career plan for the next 5–10 years.”

Strategy: Be ambitious but credible. Show a logical progression: how the master’s will give you specific skills, how those skills will enable your next career step, and how you’ll ultimately contribute to your home country’s development. Chevening’s stated mission is to develop future leaders who will contribute to their home countries.

The Interview

Shortlisted candidates are invited to a 30-minute panel interview at the British Embassy or High Commission. The interview typically covers:

Your essays in more depth (they have them in front of them)

Current affairs relating to your country and the UK

Your understanding of Chevening’s mission and network

Timeline for 2026–27 Entry

Applications open: August 2026

Applications close: Early November 2026

Shortlisting and interviews: February–April 2027

Results: June 2027

Studies begin: September/October 2027

Start preparing your essays in July—four 500-word essays take longer than you think.
